Custom Emergency Mask OEM Development

Asia Connection Helped a U.S. Client Bring a Custom Emergency Mask to Mass Production

In 2013, a U.S. importer and distributor of swimming pool rescue and emergency products started an emergency mask OEM development project with Asia Connection. The client provided a physical reference sample but no formal engineering drawings, 3D data, or complete manufacturing specifications. Asia Connection supported requirement clarification, reference-sample analysis, 3D drawing development, process planning, development of nine tooling sets, and multiple T1, T2, and T3 prototype rounds. The product entered mass production in 2014. Asia Connection also provided relevant product technical information when the client needed to complete the FDA 510(k) regulatory process.

Solution 1. How to Develop a Custom Emergency Mask From an Existing Reference Sample?

The client wanted to develop an emergency mask based on the functional direction of an existing product. The reference product included a mask body, an adapter, and a one-way valve structure.

The client did not want to directly copy the existing commercial product. Instead, the goal was to use the product as a functional reference and establish a separate product design.

At the beginning of development, the client did not provide formal engineering drawings, 3D data, or complete manufacturing specifications. Asia Connection therefore had to clarify the client’s requirements before translating the functional concept into an engineering design suitable for prototyping, tooling, and production.

Asia Connection and the manufacturing team analyzed the components, mask structure, adapter, and one-way valve mechanism of the reference sample, then developed new 3D drawings and manufacturing methods based on the requirements confirmed with the client.

From Reference Sample to Engineering Design

From Reference Sample to Engineering Design
The project started with a physical reference sample and functional requirements. Asia Connection analyzed the mask structure, adapter, and one-way valve mechanism, then developed new 3D drawings and manufacturing methods based on the client’s requirements.

The project therefore went beyond build-to-print OEM manufacturing. Development started with a physical reference sample and functional requirements and progressed toward a new product structure and manufacturing solution.

Solution 2. How Did Nine Tooling Sets and Multiple T1, T2, and T3 Prototype Rounds Support Product Development?

The emergency mask consisted of multiple components rather than a single plastic part. One of the key engineering considerations was how to assemble the different structures while addressing the airtightness required for the mask.

The client did not provide detailed manufacturing methods for these structures, so Asia Connection had to evaluate the production approach from the engineering and manufacturing side.

One specific issue involved joining an upper component to the mask body. The engineering team had to evaluate how the parts should be bonded, how the structure should be manufactured, and how the assembled product could maintain the required airtight performance.

The project involved nine tooling sets and multiple tooling and prototype rounds, including T1, T2, and T3 stages. After each prototype round, the client reviewed the product structure, function, or appearance, and Asia Connection continued making revisions based on the client’s feedback.

Tooling Trials and Prototype Validation

Tooling Trials and Prototype Validation
The project involved nine tooling sets and multiple T1, T2, and T3 prototype rounds. After each round, the client reviewed the product structure, function, or appearance, and Asia Connection made revisions based on the client’s feedback.

Through the repeated process of tool trial, prototype, client evaluation, and revision, both parties established a product version approved for formal production.

The product entered mass production in 2014.

Solution 3. How Did Asia Connection Support the Client During the FDA 510(k) Regulatory Process?

The product is required to complete the FDA 510(k) regulatory process. After discussions between the client and Asia Connection, the client appointed a U.S.-based professional organization to manage the FDA 510(k) submission. Asia Connection supported the process by providing relevant technical information from the product development and manufacturing side.

Responsibilities were divided between the parties. The U.S.-based professional organization managed the 510(k) application process and document preparation, while Asia Connection supplied relevant engineering and technical information for the product.

The client appointed a U.S.-based professional organization to manage the FDA 510(k) submission, while Asia Connection provided relevant engineering and technical information from the product development and manufacturing side.

Asia Connection’s involvement in the project therefore extended beyond initial OEM development and mass production to ongoing technical support when regulatory documentation needs emerged later in the product lifecycle.

How Asia Connection can help you further

When Medical Device Brand Owners/Importers, Medical Device Product Development teams, or Emergency Product Brands have an existing reference sample, product concept, or functional requirement but do not have complete engineering drawings, Asia Connection can support reference-sample analysis, 3D drawing development, mechanical and manufacturing-process development, tooling development, multiple tooling trials, prototype validation, and subsequent production, depending on actual project requirements.

If regulatory documentation needs arise later in the product lifecycle, Asia Connection can also provide relevant product-development and manufacturing technical information according to requirements identified by the client or the client’s regulatory professional.

To help us understand your emergency mask OEM project, please include your intended use, key functional requirements, available reference samples or drawings, estimated order quantity, target market, and expected timeline. If you do not have complete engineering drawings, you are welcome to share a product concept or reference photos.
