Clinical thermometer, also known as medical thermometer, is used for measuring human body temperature. The clinical thermometers are quite handy in instantly recording any abnormalities in the required value of the body temperature, and are commonly used at medical clinics, hospitals, and also at homes. Apart from being safer than mercury thermometer, digital thermometers provided accurate reading using digital technology. Moreover, the digital displays made it convenient to instantly record the temperature values.
On the basis of the location or body part used for measuring temperature, the most common type is oral thermometer. The instrument is placed below the patient’s tongue and is effective in recording temperatures for adults. Same instruments can be used under armpits to measure the temperature among kids. Rectal thermometers are regarded as the most accurate instruments to read the temperature of body. These are placed inside the anus and are less commonly used for the obvious reason of causing discomfort.
Basal thermometer is another popular type of thermometers frequently used by women for ovulation tracking. Basal body temperature (BBT) is the lowest body temperature attained during sleep. In women, ovulation causes a sustained increase of at least 0.2°C(0.4°F) in BBT. BBT measurement is usually taken immediately after awakening. Monitoring BBTs is one way of estimating the day of ovulation. The tendency of a woman to have lower temperatures before ovulation, and higher temperatures afterwards, is known as a biphasic temperature pattern. Charting this pattern may be used as a component of fertility awareness.
