A nasal aspirator, also known as a nose cleaner, removes congestion by drawing fluids out through the baby’s nostrils by suction. Not only are newborn babies more likely to get sick or have serious congestion of the nose, they also lack the ability to get rid of congestion themselves. Nasal aspirators immediately make it easier for the baby to breathe. There are numerous types of nasal aspirators on the market today.
An electric nasal aspirator is a battery operated device which offers continuous suction of the baby’s nose. All the parents have to do make this model work is push a button and insert it into the baby’s nose and wait for the snot to drain. The tips of the device are made from biocompatible silicone material for the safety of the child. An electric model makes a great aspirator for most parents because it is easy to use and the constant suction saves the parents a lot of trouble.
On the other hand, a manual nasal aspirator, also known as a human suction nasal aspirator, is powered by parent’s mouth suction. One end(the nose-piece) goes into the nostril of the baby and the other end(the mouth-piece) goes into the mouth of the parent. The vacuum is generated when the parent sucks on the mouth-piece; the snot will be collected in the container. Some parents prefer this type of nasal aspirators because the suction level is entirely controlled by the parent.
Sometimes using a nasal aspirator isn’t enough especially when your baby is truly sick with a cold and congestion. Using a saline nose spray can help clear up the mucus and make suctioning easier. Most saline sprays or drops can be purchased over the counter and are very easy to use. One to two drops are usually plenty. The mucus will be loosened up by the saline so that the parents can clear it out more easily.
